Doña Celia is ironing some sheets when the telephone rings.

“Yes?”

“Doña Celia, is that you? This is Don Francisco.”

“Don Francisco! What’s up with you?”

“Oh well, not much. Are you going to be around in your house?”

“Yes, yes, I don’t go out very much at all, you know that.”

“Well, then, I’ll be around at about nine.”

“Whenever you want, you know I’m at your service. Shall I call . . . ?”

“No, don’t call anyone.”

“All right, very good.”

Doña Celia hung up the telephone, clicked her fingers, and went into the kitchen to take a little shot of anis. There were days when everything went well. The bad thing was that there were also days when everything got messed up and it was all a dead loss.
